If you live in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Riyadh, Doha, or elsewhere in the Gulf, airline counters and blog posts often blur two different things: your passport nationality and your UAE (or Gulf) residence permit. For Indonesia entry, the visa path follows the passport, not the Emirates ID or iqama alone.

This guide explains that distinction for UAE and Gulf-based travellers, with practical examples for Indian, Pakistani, and Nepali passports—plus where UAE passport holders should start.

Passport nationality decides Indonesia status

Indonesia’s categories (visa-free, VoA / e-VoA, eVisa required, special cases) are tied to the country that issued your travel document. A UAE residence visa proves you live in the UAE; it does not rewrite your Indonesia eligibility to match a UAE passport.

Common Gulf expat passport examples

These examples are for travellers who live in the UAE/Gulf but hold another passport. Confirm live status on each country page before you book non-refundable flights.

India (very common Dubai / Abu Dhabi corridor)

Indian passport holders are generally VoA / e-VoA eligible for tourism. Many India–Bali travellers from the Gulf either:

• Buy VoA on arrival at a designated port (e.g. Bali DPS), or
• Apply e-VoA online before departure (often better for peak arrivals and late flights)

Pakistan

Pakistani passport holders typically follow Pakistan Indonesia rules (often an online visit / eVisa path rather than assuming airport VoA). Living in Dubai or Sharjah does not automatically unlock VoA. Start at Pakistan requirements and apply online when that is your status.

Nepal

Nepali passport holders should use Nepal requirements. Gulf residence is irrelevant to the category; prepare documents and apply according to Nepal’s Indonesia status.

UAE passport holders

Long-haul Gulf → Bali routes benefit from applying e-VoA / online when eligible, so approval exists before a multi-leg journey.

Documents Gulf-based travellers should prepare

Regardless of residence city:

1. Passport valid 6+ months from arrival, with a usable blank page
2. Passport-style photo for online applications
3. Return or onward ticket
4. Accommodation proof and funds evidence as applicable
5. Residence permit only if a form or airline asks for it as supporting ID—it still does not replace passport-based visa rules

Name spelling must match the passport used for Indonesia—not only the name format on your Emirates ID.
